In 2008-2009 Paddington area Leasing Issues Hit the News
with the closure of treasured local stores due to rent hikes forcing
popular businesses to close down whilst in some cases leaving these
commercial prime area sites vacant for some time. Vacant sites create
an eye-sore along a bustling retail street affecting surrounding shops.

RENT hikes drive small business owners out of Paddington Oct 2008
BIWCC called Don Gilbert to address a community meeting of concerned
local store owners and assist with advice to the stores and businessess
facing closure and issues with their rising rents. With the assistance of
Cr Peter Matic Toowong Ward BIWCC gained funding from the
Lord Mayor Newman Community Funds to assist local businesses with
Leasing advice.
BIWCC, Don Gilbert -Legal Leasing advice was offered to the local
stores since receiving the 2009 funding. Brisbane Inner West Chamber
of Commerce had visited the local businesses regularly and offered the
advice and seminar events. Some businesses spoke to Don Gilbert to
gain his expert opinion on their concerns and lease renewals. Others
had gained information from Don's and the Legal Leasing advice papers on BIWCC website from September 2009.

BIWCC is very grateful to Don Gilbert, Graham Isles and Bill McMillan
for their valuable time at 2 September 2010 eventS for our local area.
BIWCC held a very successful NIGHT of 28 local business attendees who
gained much benefit from both Don and Graham. One long-time local
business learnt that renegotiating their lease early could create much
more security and business goodwill for their work of over 10 years.
